Welcome to the first KRFlack Fine Art Newsletter! Here I will be updating you about new work, painting adventures and events I participate in.
The main event consuming my life for the past couple of months has been Artomatic. For those of you not in the DMV area, it is a gigantic art show open to artists of all kinds where they transform a vacant building into an art gallery. There are over 1,000 artists exhibiting their work, putting on shows, musical performances, etc. I heard about it early this year, applied that same day and began preparing. I have a two wall corner in the hallway near the elevators (at first it wasn't available but I was able to secure this amazing spot eventually!). The show opened on March 8th and ends on April 28th.
I try to paint at my spot at least once a week so I can talk to the people milling about. It has been an amazing experience and I sold a few paintings. Artomatic has opened new doors for me and I am excited to share my upcoming adventures with you all! All of my Artomatic paintings are also on my website for purchase. Make sure you check them out before they're gone!
We can't end the first newsletter without bringing up the amazing painting trips I went on last year. 2023 was truly a transformative year for me. I was feeling stuck and frustrated with my art at the beginning of the year and I had no clue what was in store for me. In February of 2023 I started taking a studio plein air class at The Art League with Bethanne Kinsella Cople (she is the best, go check out her work!). Her teaching and the introduction to the RGM 81 palette knife completely changed my life! They unlocked a part of my brain I had been trying to access for so long! Last June I ended up going on Bethanne's painting trip to the Provence region of France where I continued to grow my painting skills. It lined up perfectly with another one of my amazing mentor's workshop in France, Jun Shiozawa (another amazing artist to check out!). After painting all of the beautiful landscapes of Provence in oils I moved on to Nice to work with Jun in watercolor.
My painting trip to France was truly a dream, I will forever cherish that summer and am grateful for the path it set me on. 2024 started off with a bang because of all the transformation in 2023! Thank you for supporting me on this journey.
