Greetings from snowy DC! We’re currently on day four of a week full of snow days. A mix of snow and sleet rolled in on Sunday, making for epic sledding on Capitol Hill. Schools have been closed ever since, and between sledding escapades, I’ve been tucked away painting.
I’ve been working on winter scenes for the past couple of weeks (you’re welcome for manifesting all this snow 😉). I’ve been approaching these paintings a little differently than usual, starting with pink and purple underpaintings before layering in bold, playful colors. It’s been a joy to experiment—especially with snow, which I don’t get to paint nearly often enough. These new winter pieces will be on view at Byrne Gallery in February.
After a wildly busy holiday season full of commissions, I was ready for a slower January, a reset. Of course, every time I wish for that, I’m met with a never-ending to-do list. Still, I always try to protect time for my landscapes, and I’m so grateful to be back in the studio in the new year.
That said, this year hasn’t been all cozy studio moments. I applied for a solo show at a local gallery and was rejected, and I also didn’t receive enough votes to join a local painting group. Rejection is part of this profession, and while I’ve mostly grown used to it, these were two tough ones right out of the gate. Doubt inevitably creeps in, but I keep going.
If you’re having a hard moment yourself, know that each day brings something new, sometimes wonderful, sometimes challenging. All we can do is keep showing up and moving forward. 💙

We had a fun little photo shoot for the snow paintings yesterday
